Freyung is the seat of the Freyung-Grafenau district in Lower Bavaria, built around a market square close to the Czech border. The town grew on forestry and trade, and the hills around it still carry the dense spruce and beech woods that give the Bavarian Forest its name. Marked trails lead straight from the town into the Bavarian Forest National Park, where protected wilderness areas shelter the region's wildlife. Wooden cabins and guesthouses sit scattered through the surrounding hills and valleys, and the forest is the reason most people find their way here. Local shops sell Bavarian Forest glass, a craft that has shaped the region for generations, alongside cured meats and bread from nearby farms. The seasons set the rhythm: wildflowers fill the meadows in spring, the high trails open through summer, beech woods turn gold in autumn, and snow settles over the Geyersberg and its ridges in winter. Small markets and festivals follow the harvest calendar and the forest itself, giving the town its own quiet, unhurried pace built around walking the woods rather than ticking off sights.
