Aichach.

Castles

Aichach is a quiet market town in the Wittelsbacher Land district of Bavarian Swabia, set on the River Paar between Augsburg and Ingolstadt. The town is historically significant as the place where the Wittelsbach family — the dynasty that ruled Bavaria for nearly 800 years — has its origins. On the castle hill at nearby Oberwittelsbach, the foundations of the original Wittelsbach castle still survive, now marked as a national monument. The Wittelsbacher Museum, housed inside the medieval Lower Gate tower, traces the rise of the family from local counts to rulers of Bavaria and beyond. The town centre retains its market-town character, with a Gothic church and a pleasant main square. The wider Wittelsbacher Land is good cycling country, and the nearby Kühbach Brewery is one of Bavaria's oldest.
