Konstanz sits on the southern shore of Lake Constance, directly on the border with Switzerland. The Old Town's dense core of medieval and baroque buildings surrounds the Münster, the city's sandstone cathedral, and the Imperia statue stands at the harbour entrance.
The university gives the city a younger, open feel, with cafés and bookshops filling the lanes near the harbour. The lakefront promenade connects the old quarter to gardens and swimming spots, within sight of Mainau island and its botanical grounds across the water. Paths along the shoreline lead into orchards and reed beds, tracing the curve of the lake toward the quieter villages beyond the centre.
