Jonquières is a wine village in the Vaucluse, within the Côtes du Rhône Villages appellation in the southern Rhône valley. Vineyards surround the village on all sides, growing grapes for the reds and rosés the appellation is known for. Olive groves are worked alongside the vines, and small producers press oil as well as wine.
The village centre has kept its old Provençal character: pale stone houses, shuttered windows, and narrow streets built on a human scale, with little changed from its life as a farming village. A market brings in produce from the surrounding countryside — tomatoes, melons, cheeses, and locally pressed olive oil. Several wine estates around Jonquières open their cellars for tastings, and walking paths lead out through the surrounding vineyards. The rhythm of the place follows the vineyard calendar, from pruning and spring growth through to the September harvest.
