Gigondas sits on a steep hillside in the Vaucluse, backed by the jagged limestone ridges of the Dentelles de Montmirail. The village gives its name to one of the Rhône valley's respected red wine appellations, built on old Grenache vines grown on rocky, sun-baked terraces. Cellar doors and small tasting rooms line the lanes below the church, where stone streets climb past shuttered houses toward a fountain-fed square. Vineyards run right up to the edge of the built-up area, and paths into the Dentelles start almost from the village center, climbing quickly into pale rock and scrub pine with views back over the vines toward Mont Ventoux. The rhythm of the place follows the vineyard calendar: pruning in winter, budding vines in spring, and a September harvest that fills the air with the smell of fermenting grapes. Away from the tasting rooms, Gigondas keeps the quiet pace of a small wine village, with little traffic beyond growers moving between cellar and vine.
