Tuchan sits among the rugged hills of the Corbières massif, at the heart of the Fitou wine appellation in Aude. Steep, rocky slopes surround the village, where old Carignan and Grenache vines grow in shallow schist soil and produce dense, powerful red wines. The village center keeps its stone houses and narrow streets, built from the same dark schist that shapes the surrounding terraces. Garrigue, the wild Mediterranean scrub that covers the hillsides between the vine rows, scents the air with thyme and rosemary. Hiking trails climb from the village toward the ridges, giving wide views over the vineyards and surrounding hills. Cathar castle ruins crown several nearby peaks, remnants of the medieval conflicts that once shaped this part of Languedoc. Local cellars open for tastings of Fitou reds, made from vines that can be decades old. The vineyard calendar sets the rhythm of the village: pruning in winter, flowering in spring, and harvest activity filling the slopes in September. Tuchan remains a working wine village, quiet and set apart from the busier coastal towns of the region.
