Furth bei Göttweig lies in the Kremstal wine region of Lower Austria, where vineyard terraces rise toward the abbey on the hill above. Göttweig Abbey was founded in 1083 and rebuilt in Baroque style after a fire in 1718; it remains a working monastery with a church open to the public. From its terrace, the land falls toward the Danube, with wooded hills visible in the distance.
The village below is small and quiet, with wine-growers' houses and cellar doors along its streets. Grüner Veltliner and Riesling are grown on the surrounding slopes, and many producers open their cellars for tastings. Paths lead from the village directly into the vineyards and connect to walking routes across the Kremstal hills. Local festivals follow the wine calendar, from spring blossom to the autumn harvest, giving the village a rhythm shaped by both the vines and the abbey above it.
