Purbach sits on the western shore of Lake Neusiedl, enclosed by well-preserved medieval town walls. Gates and watchtowers still mark the old boundary, and cellars cut into the walls — the Türkenkeller — take their name from the era of Ottoman incursions into the region, when local memory holds that villagers sheltered there. Inside the walls, narrow lanes lined with wine taverns and vintners' houses keep the town's working character intact: this is a place that makes wine as much as it preserves history.

Blaufränkisch and other red grapes do well in the warm, lake-moderated microclimate, and family-run estates open their cellars for tastings alongside the taverns. The historic core is compact, with stone facades and wrought-iron tavern signs marking one wine house after another along the main street. Vineyards rise gently behind the town, while the shallow lake lies open just beyond the old walls.
