Buonconvento.
A small walled town among the vineyards of the Val d'Orcia.

Buonconvento sits in the Val d'Orcia, its brick walls and towers enclosing a small medieval center that has kept its original shape since the Middle Ages. The town grew as a market and staging point on the Via Francigena, the old pilgrim road linking northern Europe to Rome, and the walled circuit still follows the same lines it held centuries ago. Inside, narrow streets of stone houses lead to the Museo d'Arte Sacra della Val d'Arbia, which gathers paintings and objects from churches across the surrounding countryside. Beyond the walls, the land opens into the rolling hills of the Val d'Orcia: vineyards, olive groves, and wheat fields that turn gold in early summer. The town sits close to Montalcino, home of Brunello wine, and to Montepulciano's Vino Nobile estates, making it a natural base for exploring the region's vineyards. Local trattorias serve dishes built on grain, olive oil, and cured meats, reflecting the agricultural life that still shapes the town today.
