Piran.

Piran sits on a narrow peninsula on the Adriatic coast of Slovenian Istria, its old town built close against the water in the Venetian Gothic style shared with much of the eastern Adriatic. Tartini Square forms the heart of the town, named after the composer Giuseppe Tartini, and lined with tall pastel façades facing the harbour. Steep, narrow lanes rise from the square toward St. George's Church, whose hilltop position gives a wide view over the rooftops and the Gulf of Trieste. Stretches of the old town walls still trace the upper hillside above the rooftops. The harbour below keeps its working character, with fishing boats tied up along the promenade and seafood restaurants serving what comes off them. Small beaches sit right at the edge of the old town, and the nearby Sečovlje salt pans are part of the same coastal landscape. Piran's mix of Venetian architecture and an active local port gives it a lived-in feel beyond its monuments.
