Koper.

Koper sits at the northern edge of the Adriatic, the largest town on Slovenia's short coastline and an important port. Its old town keeps the layout and stone of a Venetian possession: narrow lanes open onto squares framed by Gothic and Renaissance facades, and the Praetorian Palace still anchors the main square as the seat of civic power once held by Venice. The Cathedral of the Assumption rises nearby, its bell tower visible from much of the historic centre. Markets along the old streets sell produce from the Istrian hinterland and fish brought in by local boats. Outside the old walls, a modern marina and promenade face the sea, backed by vineyards and olive groves that climb the hills inland. The Istrian countryside around Koper produces wine and olive oil found on menus across the town. Mediterranean light and mild winters give Koper a pace closer to its Adriatic neighbours than to the rest of Slovenia.
