Węgorzewo sits on the northern shore of Lake Mamry, the second-largest lake in Poland, where the water opens into the wider Great Masurian Lake District. The town has long served sailors and anglers, its marina lined with yachts and motorboats bound for the open lake beyond.
Away from the water, Węgorzewo keeps a modest, practical center, with local markets selling regional produce and small eateries serving traditional Masurian dishes. The surrounding countryside is flat and wooded, crossed by paths that follow the lakeshore.
