Bolgheri is a small village in coastal Tuscany, known above all for the long, straight avenue of cypress trees that leads toward it — an image reproduced on countless postcards and labels. The village itself is compact, with a quiet pace that sits apart from its international reputation. That reputation comes from wine: the area around Bolgheri produces some of Italy's best-known reds, including Sassicaia and Ornellaia. Vineyards cover the gentle hills toward the coast, mixed with olive groves and pine woods, and many estates open their cellars for tastings through the year. Harvest in early autumn brings extra activity to the vineyards and cellars. Pine forests and sandy beaches lie along the nearby coast, adding a seaside dimension to the wine country. Local trattorias serve Tuscan dishes made with olive oil and wild boar, alongside the wines made just outside the door.
