Wannsee.

Wannsee is a lake district in the southwest of Berlin, formed where the river Havel widens into the Großer Wannsee and the Kleiner Wannsee. Grand villas line much of the shore, built by wealthy Berliners from the late 19th century onward as summer retreats from the city centre. Among them stands the Haus der Wannsee-Konferenz, a memorial and museum in the villa where, in January 1942, senior Nazi officials met to coordinate the deportation and murder of Europe's Jews. The painter Max Liebermann kept a garden villa on the lake, now open to the public as a museum of his work.

Strandbad Wannsee runs along the eastern shore, a long sandy beach with changing cabins and open lawns facing the water. Sailing boats and rowing boats cross the lake through the warmer months, and paths follow the shoreline into the forest beyond. Just across the water lies Pfaueninsel, a small island with peacocks, part of the same chain of lakes and parkland along Berlin's edge.
