Lacommande.

Lacommande sits in the Béarn area of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, on a stretch of the old pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. The village grew around a hospital run by a religious order that cared for travellers on the road, and its Romanesque church, with carved capitals, still stands as a reminder of that history. Traditional Béarnais houses, some with half-timbered walls, line the quiet streets.

Just outside the village, the hillsides rise into the Jurançon wine area, where steep slopes are planted with grapes such as Petit Manseng and Gros Manseng. Local estates produce both sweet and dry white wines from these vines, and several open their cellars for tastings. From the higher ground, the Pyrenees appear as a backdrop to the vineyard rows.

The surrounding countryside also carries stretches of the Compostela trail, giving walkers a link between the village's pilgrim past and its present life among the vines.
