Voiron sits at the foot of the Chartreuse massif in Isère, known worldwide as the home of Chartreuse liqueur. The green and yellow spirits are distilled here from a recipe handed to Carthusian monks in 1737 and kept secret ever since, known today to only two monks who guard the exact blend of alpine herbs. The Caves de la Chartreuse, built into the hillside above the town, hold the ageing barrels and can be visited, ending in a tasting room. Around the distillery, Voiron keeps a solid town centre with markets and older buildings that reflect its history as a trading and manufacturing town for the region. The wooded slopes and limestone cliffs of the Chartreuse Regional Nature Park rise just outside town, giving Voiron a quiet base close to the northern Alps.
