Savonlinna lies among the channels and islands of Lake Saimaa, in the Etelä-Savo region of eastern Finland. At its centre, the 15th-century Olavinlinna Castle occupies its own small island, surrounded by water on every side. It was founded in 1475 to guard the eastern border of the Swedish kingdom, and its towers and courtyards remain open for guided tours.
Each July, the castle's main courtyard turns into an open-air opera stage for the Savonlinna Opera Festival. Outside the festival, the town keeps a quieter lake rhythm. Wooden villas line the shore, small boats move in and out of the harbour, and the water opens toward Linnansaari National Park, where the rare Saimaa ringed seal lives. Trails along the shoreline wind past pine forest and bare granite, and the wider lake system is suited to slow exploration by boat or on foot.
