Prinzendorf an der Zaya lies in the Weinviertel, Austria's largest wine-growing region, where rows of vines cover the hills above the Zaya river. Grüner Veltliner is the main grape, grown alongside other white varieties on family-run estates that open their cellars for tastings in traditional rooms. The village centre is made up of solid farmhouses with thick walls and tiled roofs, set along quiet lanes. A path beside the Zaya links the vineyards to nearby fields and small patches of forest, used by walkers and cyclists moving between villages. In the heurigen — taverns run directly by winemaking families — simple seasonal dishes are served alongside the house wine. Vines are pruned in late winter, flower in early summer, and the harvest fills the cellars each autumn.
