Scheßlitz is a small market town in the Bamberg district of Upper Franconia, sitting at the edge of the Franconian Switzerland nature park. The town is dominated by the Giechburg, a hilltop castle dating to the 12th century, now partially ruined but still offering excellent views over the surrounding countryside and reachable on foot from the town. Scheßlitz is also known for an improbable concentration of breweries for a town of its size — five local breweries produce traditional Franconian lager in a setting where beer culture is lived rather than performed. A nearby pilgrimage church and a prehistoric burial mound add further historical depth. The wider area around Scheßlitz is good hiking and cycling country, with forested hills and the limestone landscape of Franconian Switzerland beginning just to the east.
