Peso da Régua sits where the Corgo river joins the Douro, at the point where the valley's terraced vineyards open into a working town. For centuries this was the gathering point for Port wine before it moved downriver to Porto's cellars, and the trade still shapes the place: wine lodges and tasting rooms line the riverfront, and a wine museum traces the history of the terraces and the barrels once shipped from here. Flat-bottomed rabelo boats, once loaded with wine casks, are moored along the promenade as a reminder of that river trade. The town climbs gently from the water into ordinary streets of shops and cafés, with daily life continuing alongside the wine business. The hills around Régua carry the steep stone terraces of the Alto Douro Wine Region, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape, and quintas producing Port and table wines spread across the slopes in every direction. Régua works as a wine town in its own right and as a base for exploring that wider landscape.
