Nida sits on the Curonian Spit, a narrow strip of forest and sand between the Baltic Sea and the Curonian Lagoon, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its shifting dune landscape. The village keeps its old fishing character, with wooden houses lining its streets. Thomas Mann built his summer house here in the 1930s, drawn by the quiet and the view over the lagoon; the house is now a small museum devoted to his time on the spit.
Above the village, the Parnidis Dune rises in bare sand, shaped constantly by wind off the sea. Below, the lagoon side stays calmer, lined with reed beds and fishing boats. The forest behind the village, planted over generations to hold the dunes in place, separates Nida from the open coastline of the spit.
