Escales sits among the vineyards of the Corbières, the hilly wine region that stretches across this part of Occitanie. The village is built from local stone, with old houses and gardens set among the vines. Around it, rows of vines alternate with olive groves, and the Corbières' red wines remain a defining feature of the area.
Several family-run wineries operate near the village, many open for tastings of their Corbières AOC reds, rosés, and whites. Olive oil production continues alongside the wine, a combination common across this part of the Corbières. Low hills around Escales carry walking paths through vineyard and scrubland.
The village follows the agricultural calendar: vines bud in spring, fill out through summer, and are picked in September, when activity returns to the cellars. The countryside around Escales keeps a working, unpolished character.
