Cavtat sits on a small peninsula on the Adriatic coast, a short stretch south of Dubrovnik. The town traces its roots to the ancient settlement of Epidaurum, whose people are said to have founded Dubrovnik after fleeing invasions in the early Middle Ages. Little remains of that era above ground, but the layered history shows in the stone houses, churches, and the former Rector's Palace.

The harbour curves around the peninsula, framed by pines and palms, with a waterfront walk linking cafés, konobas, and small pebble beaches. On the cemetery hill above town stands the Račić family mausoleum. Painter Vlaho Bukovac was born in Cavtat, and his birthplace is kept as a memorial house with his paintings on display.

Beyond the old centre, paths through pine woods lead to quieter coves, while the inland Konavle valley is known for its vineyards. Cavtat keeps the rhythm of a working Dalmatian harbour town, with boats for hire and daily life unfolding along the waterfront.
