Velden
am Wörthersee.

Velden am Wörthersee sits at the western end of the Wörthersee in Carinthia, and it has grown up entirely around the water. The lake itself is one of the warmest in the Alps, and the town's whole rhythm follows its temperature rather than a calendar of sights.

The defining building is Schloss Velden, a Renaissance castle built around 1590. It burned down in 1762 and was rebuilt, reopening as a hotel in 1890 — a role it has kept ever since as the Falkensteiner Schlosshotel Velden. The castle sits directly on the shoreline, its pale façade and corner tower reflected in the water, and it remains the reference point for the whole resort: streets, gardens and the promenade all seem to arrange themselves around it.

That promenade, known locally as the Casino Promenade, runs along the main square in a stretch of Belle Époque buildings, cafés and small boutiques. It fills in the evening with strollers moving between the water and the shopfronts, and it has long kept Velden's reputation as the most sociable of the Wörthersee towns, drawing visitors from Vienna, Graz and beyond.

The lake is the main activity. A town beach gives direct access to swimming, and the water stays warm enough through summer that Velden's beaches fill early in the day. A cycling path follows the full shoreline, an easy, flat ride that connects Velden to Pörtschach and on to Maria Wörth, where a pilgrimage church stands on a narrow peninsula. Boats cross the lake regularly in season, and a short trip across to Maria Wörth or along the shore toward Klagenfurt shows the lake from a different angle than the promenade does.

Five kilometres east, Rosegg Castle keeps its own wildlife park, home to wolves, deer and other animals native to the surrounding forests — a quieter counterpart to Velden's lakeside energy. South of the town, the road climbs quickly into the foothills of the Karawanken range, where the lake basin gives way to steeper, forested slopes.

Velden changes considerably with the seasons. Summer brings warm water, full promenades and the busiest version of the town; spring and early autumn bring the same lake and castle views with far fewer people on the paths, and the water is still swimmable well into September. Winter empties the resort almost completely, leaving the castle lit against a still, cold lake — a different town, but a recognisable one.
