Puylaurens is a dramatic Cathar fortress in the Aude department of Occitanie, rising from a sheer rocky summit above the Boulzane valley. Built mainly in the 13th century, it was one of the so-called 'Five Sons of Carcassonne' — a chain of royal fortresses defending the newly conquered Cathar territory. The castle's well-preserved towers, walls and round keeps command extraordinary views over the Pyrenees and the Corbières hills. The village below is tiny and quiet, with the surrounding landscape a mix of oak scrub, wild lavender and rocky gorges. It's a place for those who want history on their own terms — no queues, no crowds, just wind, rock and medieval stone.
